Taking the Fourth

Willie Mays signs autographs at Candlestick Park in San Francisco before a July 4, 1977 old-timers game. Note the winter clothing worn by the fans.

We have fought and toiled and died for 234 years, just so we can be here today watching baseball, playing with our kids, eating gooey barebeque and enjoying some cold ones.  May everyone out there have a wonderful holiday.

A couple of stray items:

• Later this week I’ll have a special announcement about my boffo upcoming 1977 All-Star plans.

• Tomorrow night (Monday the 5th) I’ll be making my first foray into the podcasting netherworld, when I guest host What’s on Second, the Seamheads radio hour with site founder Mike Lynch.  Our scheduled guests are Chad Finn from the Boston Globe and Bob Wirz to talk about the independent Atlantic League.  If you’d like to hear me attempt vocal coherence, the show can be accessed starting at 9 p.m. eastern from the right side of this page. —J.P.
